What is in a boba tea?

Boba tea, also known as pearl milk tea in Taiwan and bubble tea in Southeast Asia, is a sweet and creamy drink with chewy tapioca pearls or popping balls. It took off in popularity and spread quickly from its origins in Taiwan to cafes, food trucks, and stores worldwide. The most popular varieties contain tea, sugar, milk, ice cubes and the chewy tapioca pearls or popping balls.

Is boba tea good for you?

Boba drinks are delicious and fun to drink, but they aren't the best beverage for health-conscious people. Many believe that sipping on milk tea is a healthy alternative to coffee or soda, but the calorie and sugar content of milk teas should be taken into consideration.

What is so special about boba tea?

Boba, Bubble Tea, or Pearl Milk Tea—call it what you will—these drinks with tapioca balls or popping fruit juice balls have become more and more popular outside of Asia. It's the texture that is uniquely special to bobas: The chewy exterior of tapioca pearls or the popping fruit juice balls bursting with fruit juice that adds a surprising twist to your drink.

What does boba tea taste like?

Depending on the type of flavour you go for, boba tea is sweet and fruity or sweet and milky. What's special about having this drink is the unexpected texture of chewy tapioca balls or the fruit-juice-filled popping balls in your mouth while sipping away at your drink.

Do you eat the boba balls?

Yes, boba balls are definitely edible. Tapioca balls are made of starch from the cassava plant, while the bursting popping balls have a thin seaweed coating that's brimming with fruit juice in the centre. Whatever you choose, you can enjoy eating them while sipping your tea.

Can kids drink boba?

When we say boba or bubble tea, most of us think the drink is for grown-ups. But, in fact, kids can have it too. It should only be given to older kids, as younger children might choke on them.

Why do people drink boba?

Boba originated in Taiwan but has gained popularity in the West. The combination of refreshing tea and fruit drink with boba balls offers a different experience to the consuming public and is a good alternative to dairy drinks. As bubble tea has become popular, so have the options for it. It's no longer just a drink but also a dessert and meal. Bubble tea shops now offer a variety of flavours and toppings that can be added to your drink.
