Among the refreshments that have been gaining popularity in recent years is bubble tea. This refreshing take on the usual tea we’ve known for years originated in Taiwan and is now taking the world by storm. The drink is made even more fun and satisfying by its “bubble” component or the boba. These are the pearls that are found either sitting at the bottom or as toppings.
Until recently, we only know of tapioca pearls but there is another one that is also slowly gaining popularity and they are called popping boba.
Popping boba is the burst-in-your-mouth version of the pearls because they literally release flavor as you bite into them. It is not chewy like the more common tapioca pearls, but you will certainly enjoy its fruity flavors and you will find it refreshingly indulging especially during the hot summer days as it easily adds variety to frozen drinks and smoothies.
There are not a lot of recipes out there yet that include popping boba, but the reality is, only your imagination can limit you in finding ways to savor the goodness that these tiny pearls have to offer. Because they have their own flavor, they can easily complement (or contrast) the taste of a rather basic dessert like ice cream or brownies. They can even be added to hot mixtures like coffee or cocoa! There is just no reason to hold back in boosting ordinary treats with this amazing food science discovery.
